November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the Mountain State ranks second nationally for adults with the disease. More than 1 into 10 West Virginia adults aged 65 and older have diabetes, statistics show. Diabetes is characterized by high levels of blood sugar resulting from defects in insulin production. Types 1 and 2 are the most common forms. Experts say there is an epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the Appalachia due to obesity.
