STATE REPUBLICANS ORGANIZE LEADERSHIP - Sprouse Retains Minority Position

(12/18/2002)
Senate Republicans unanimously nominated Minority Leader Vic Sprouse of Kanawha County for another term in that post today in Charleston.

Talk of possible challenges to Sprouse evaporated before the closed-door caucus of Senate G-O-P members.

The November election increased Sprouse's faction from six members to ten in the 34-seat Senate. Those inroads came at the expense of Finance Chairman Oshel Craigo from Putnam County and Judiciary Chairman Bill Wooton of Raleigh County.

The West Virginia Republican Legislative Committee met recently in Charleston and unanimously re-elected its leadership.

Bob Fish, current RLC General Chairman and also a Vice-Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party, was reelected General Chairman. Fish has led the RLC since December 2001.

Senator Vic Sprouse (R-Kanawha) and Delegate Charles Trump (R-Morgan) retain their positions as RLC Co-Chairmen following their re-elections to their legislative leadership posts.

Delegate John Overington (R-Berkeley) will continue as RLC Treasurer and Joe Long, Raleigh County GOP Chairman, will continue as RLC Secretary.

Fish said, "We are extremely proud of the many excellent campaigns that our candidates developed and we congratulate all our new Senators and Delegates.

The RLC is now working on plans and strategies for the next election cycle. West Virginians want change so we're going to continue to work for our candidates until we're truly turned this State around."
