The blizzard and winter of 2009 set just before Christmas, the worst winter since 1995-96. Blizzard conditions caused lengthy power and phone outages and transportation problems for county residents. Thousands of motorists got stranded on the WV Turnpike. About 200 Calhoun homes didn't have electric on Christmas Eve day.
