DRUNK DRIVER DOES "DONUTS" WITH DUMP TRUCK IN WAL-MART LOT

(11/23/2005)
It wasn't your ordinary DUI arrest, according to Roane County Trooper G. K. Walsh.

Roane County 911 received numerous calls about a drunk driver trying to maneuver a dump truck, including an attempt to "do donuts" in the WalMart parking lot in Spencer.

Police said Russell Eron Tawney, 33, did some wild driving through Spencer's Go-Mart lot and then headed to Arnoldsburg's Speedy Mart to liven things up.

Calls continued to pour into 911, according to Spencer Newspapers, reporting that a truck had been stolen from Bartlett Concrete.

Later, workers at the concrete plant said they took Tawney to the building to "sleep it off."

Police chased the truck, which was going back-and-forth on Arnoldsburg Road, US 33-119 east.

The driver eventually jumped from the vehicle near Mark's Towing on Bowers Hill and ran into the woods about 12:30 a.m., said Spencer Newspapers.

Tawney was staying with relatives on Beech Road in Calhoun County. The convicted felon, who was out on parole, turned himself over to his parole officer in Parkersburg.

Tawney was charged in Roane County for DUI-2nd offense, driving on a revoked license, and fleeing on foot. Magistrate Denver Gandee, Jr. set bond at $2000 pending a plea hearing. He is being held at North Central Regional Jail for parole violations.

The concrete company said they did not want to press charges for auto theft or joyriding, saying, "He is a pretty good guy."
