CAMPBELL GOES ON TRIAL FOR GILMER MURDER

Attorneys have selected a jury and presented their opening statements in a Gilmer County murder trial, which started yesterday in Glenville. Prosecutors claim Everett Campbell shot and killed Mark Medley, 40 of Moundsville, with a .357 Magnum, over a child custody dispute with Campbell's ex-wife. The shooting happened last July outside of Campbell's home in Sand Fork. The court says Campbell does have sole custody of his children, so as a result of the incident, Campbell's ex-wife, Mary Ann was also arrested on felony charges of attempted child concealment. Following jury selection, jurors went to the crime scene along State Rt. 5, east of Glenville. Gilmer County Prosecutor Gerald Hough said the state will prove there is no doubt that Campbell shot Medley, because he didn't want to lose control and that it was not an act of self defense. Hough says that phone messages will show that Campbell knew that Medley and his ex-wife were coming, indicating that Campbell had time to prepare himself for the shooting. Defense Attorney David Karickhoff says that the same recorded phone messages will show that the couple were threatening Campbell days before the shooting. The defense is claiming that Campbell pulled the trigger because he thought that he and his little boy and girl were in danger. Campbell was indicted on charges of second degree murder.
