SCHOOL BOARD APOLOGIZES FOR LOCKER ROOM THEFT - Expulsions Set For October 30

(10/14/2003)
School board member Ralph Cunningham asked the administration to send a letter of apology to St. Mary's, after about $1000 of merchandise and money was stolen from their football team's locker room last Friday.

Calhoun principal Emilo Garza said the locker area had been checked, and locks were locked, but at least one door could have been open with some physical power. Principal Mike Offutt said the school had ordered $600 in new locks. The board was advised, the State Police do have leads on the theft.

One or more vandals also damaged some Wirt County school buses at an earlier football game, including road lights and gas caps, said Principal Mike Offutt. Garza said at least one Calhoun student has been identified.

A special school board meeting has been set for October 30 to review the expulsion of three students on controlled substance charges.

Curriculum Director Greg Cartwright discussed the new standardized testing, including the Westest, which will replace the SAT-9.

Cartwright also discussed the state-adopted grading policy, which insures all counties use the same grading system.

The board approved the dual credit policy and the testing out policy, both of which are published on the board's web site.

Several West Virginia counties, including Calhoun, is receiving a grant to help raise college going rates and to prevent college dropout, according to Superintendent Ron Blankenship. A workshop will be held on November 20th to assist students and parents access college-bound information.

The board heard drafts of a policy to promote board efficiency and a promotion retention policy.

The board conducted personnel business, transportation requests, student transfers, a contract with Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center and Lights On! proposals.

They approved financial amounts to about $700,000.
