STUDENT PROTEST LIKELY CALLED OFF - Homecoming Parade Will Be During School Time

(10/02/2003)
A protest over the timing of Calhoun High School's homecoming parade has likely been called off.

A group of students had announced a protest during lunch hour tomorrow.

School principal Mike Offutt said the school administration has been working closely with the Student Council to resolve the issue.

The Homecoming Parade will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 10 along Route 16 at the Mt. Zion complex, he said.

The parade route extends from the Mt. Zion Drive-in to the school board offices behind the school. "Lots of room for spectators," said Offutt.

"There was not likely a problem to begin with," said Offutt, who said the Student Council did not vote for the protest, as claimed by some students.

Some students were upset because the parade had been scheduled for 5 p.m., which they said would allow for little student participation.

Offutt said the Athletic Boosters will help with the parade, and community participation is welcome. "If any group wants to participate or enter a float, we'd certainly like to have them," he said.
