Three Drowned in Henry's Fork

A terrible tragedy occurred on Henry's Fork Sunday night in which three young people, Ruth Langford, 16, Ezra Langford,14, and Commodore Mace, 14, lost their lives by drowning in the above stream.

The three unfortunate ones in company with several other people of the neighborhood had been attending church at the mouth of Pup Run and were returning home.

On their way they had to cross Henry's Fork, which at this season of the year is a rather large stream and which had been swelled by the recent rains and thaws.

Nine of the young people got in an old boat and when they were about mid stream the boat sank and the three young people named above were unable to get to shore.

It is said that the boat was old and leaky and hardly safe for a single person to use.

A Jackson Co. newspaper reported the accident happened before midnight in freezing conditions. "The six survivors were nearly frozen to death before reaching the nearest house. Farmers returned to the scene of the tragedy and after searching for four hours, recovered the bodies," the paper said.

Those who were saved are in serious condition from shock and exposure. Mr. and Mrs. Seymore Langford and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mace, parents of the victims, were among the saved.

(Editor's Note: The victims death certificate gives their address as "Rascow," a place of which we have never heard)
