REGIONAL SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR RESULTS ANNOUNCED

The 2010 Regional RESA V Social Studies Fair was held Friday, March 12, 2010, at Blennerhassett Junior High School, in Parkersburg. Thirty-two students represented Calhoun County; other counties present were Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wirt, and Wood.

There were three divisions - Division I-Fourth and Fifth Grade, Division II-Sixth through Eighth, and Division III-Ninth-Twelfth. In each division, there were two groups, individual and small group presentation. Students had a choice of 9-categories to compete in. Categories included Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, State and Local Studies, U.S. History, and World History.

Division 1 - Single competitors:

Anthropology, Natalie Allen, "Folklore" Honorable Mention; State and Local Studies, Lillith Nuzem, "My Relative: Braxton Bragg"; U.S. History, Selina Rush, "Amish Life"; World History, Kinley Hosey, "Christopher Columbus".

Group competitors:

Economics, Laura Webb and Karlie Johnson, "Do You Want Us to Stay in School? Pay Us!" First Place; Sociology, Holly Rose, "How Obesity Affects Others" Third Place; U.S. History, Sarah Bell, "The Titanic".

Not present were Alyssa Verbus, "How Obesity Affects Others" and Emily Metz, "The Titanic"; but did participate at the county level.

Division 2 - Single competitors:

Anthropology, Erica Jones, "How Nursing Has and is Changing"; Economics, Logan McKown, "Pros and Cons of Technology" Honorable Mention; Psychology, Makensy Bailey, "What Drives People"; Sociology, William Baker, "Advances of Entertainment" Third Place; U.S. History, Mitchell McKown, "Pearl Harbor" Honorable Mention; World History, Luke Shelton, "Can One Person Make a Difference"First Place.

Not present were Anthropology, Savannah Rogers; State and Local Studies, Tea Boatright; but did participate at the county level.

Every county provided five judges to judge over 100 projects. The judges from Calhoun were Don Allen, Larry Baker, Angela Dye, Robyn Ellison, and Shelvia Jones.

Thanks to the students for the hard work on their projects, the parents that took tables and projects to the fair and judged, Bill Collins for transporting the students on the bus, Tammey Webb and Bill Queen-Arnoldsburg Elementary Coordinators, Kristie Ritchie-Pleasant Hill Coordinator Dan Cosgrove-County Coordinator, and Andy Bremar-chaperon and acting County Coordinator while at the Regional Social Studies Fair.
