PLEASANT HILL RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL AWARD - Student Attendance Policies Changed Because Of Flu, New Security Starts In January

The 2009 West Virginia Title I Distinguished School Award has been presented to Pleasant Hill Elementary School at this week's meeting of the Calhoun Board of Education.

Carla Taylor, acting Title I Director presented representatives from Pleasant Hill School, Bob Bonar, Principal and Lori Parsons and Amber Price (Title I Reading Specialists) the 2009 award.

"We congratulate Pleasant Hill School for achieving this award and acknowledge the contributions of Lori Parsons, former Title I Supervisor, Jackie Dawson, former principal and former teacher, Bobbi Bell," said Taylor.

Superintendent Roger Propst explained new changes that are in effect regarding attendance, related to the flu outbreak. (See related story)

Propst announced that the paving of the highway behind Calhoun Middle-High School to the board office and garage has been approved by the WV Department of Highways. The paving will take place in the Spring.

Frank Tetrick says the current phase of the construction project at Pleasant Hill Elementary should be completed by the end of November. Tetrick also said the new security systems for county schools are in place and will be placed in operation in January.

Propst told board members that approximately 25% of the school system's students have received the H1N1 vaccine. A second round of vaccinations are scheduled. (See related story)

Board president Cynthia Dale, said she would like to see feedback on lesson plans from principals and assistant principals for all schools.

She indicated the checkmark system currently being used by one or more locations is not sufficient.

Superintendent Propst recognized the new counselor Nancy Sams, born and raised in Calhoun County, also a graduate of CCHS.

"She is a sister to one of our educators, Anita Parsons. Upon graduation, Ms. Sams moved to Washington State where she worked as counselor at a Substance Abuse Coalition, Eastern Washington University as a Residential Counselor," Propst said.

"For many years she has served as the Middle School Counselor in Kennewick, Washington," he said.
