BUILDING NEW WV SCHOOLS CUT FROM BAIL-OUT BILL

Not one penny of the multi-billion dollar economic stimulus package will be used to build new schools, money that state education officials said would help build several new schools in the Mountain State.

School Building Authority Executive Director Mark Manchin said he recently received word about the changes.

Opponents of including school construction money said funds should come from local and state sources, not the federal government.

"There is $10 billion which may be used for repair renovation, modernizations of schools," says Manchin.

Six projects on West Virginia's "shovel ready" list were for building new schools.

There are still 25 projects that may see some of the state's share of the $10 billion.

"We'll sit down and probably my guess in the next several weeks with the Governor and legislative leaders to see if that money will be used for repairs," Dr. Manchin says.

Challenge WV Coordinator Thomas Ramey said, "While many people want to have big, new consolidated schools, it could be the money could go toward much needed repairs to community schools."
