CALHOUN SETS FIVE-YEAR RECORD FOR BUCK KILLS

Calhoun's buck deer harvest has set a record high for the past five years, according to WVDNR.

The buck kill for the season ending this year is 1,269.

Previous Years:

2004 - 1,125
2005 - 859
2006 - 1,039
2007 - 1,162

Setting five-year highs:

Roane - 1,981.

Braxton - 1,694

Gilmer - 1,567.

Ritchie - 2,522

Other Regional Counties:

Wirt - 1,199 (High in 2004 of 1,234)

Clay - 525 (High in 2007 of 551)

The Division of Natural Resources preliminary figures show hunters killed 66,851 deer during West Virginia's recent two-week gun season for bucks.

The kill is 362 less then last year with 67,213 killed.

Bad weather the first two days kept hunters out of the woods.

The top 10 counties in deer kills were Preston, Ritchie, Wetzel, Randolph, Hampshire, Hardy, Lewis, Roane, Mason and Greenbrier.

West Virginia's six-day Muzzleloader deer season opens today, December 15 and continues through December 20.
