WIRT MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL FIRED

(04/17/2008)
The Wirt County School Board announced Wednesday night their decision to dismiss Wirt Middle School Principal JD Hoover from his position.

The board's decision came after nearly six hours of deliberation.

Hoover had been on suspension since October, while being investigated for bringing weapons on school property.

The weapons were unloaded and locked in his trunk, with the charges dismissed last month on a technical point of the law.

Wirt authorities have indicated charges will be re-filed.

Court records indicate that Hoover allegedly removed the weapons from a shooting incident last fall where a teen was shot in the head while hunting.

Hoover reportedly told authorities he took the weapons at the request of a friend, but later returned at least one of them to a wooded area near where the shooting happened.

Authorities said Hoover was cooperative in the investigation.

The Wirt county prosecutor has indicated that DNR officers are likely to file charges against the shooter in what has been called an accident, likely because he was a felon in possession of a firearm.
