Validating Calhoun's computer voting machines began yesterday, preparing some of the devices for early voters in the county clerk's office, starting next Wednesday, April 23rd.

Richard Kirby, Calhoun's chief election official, spent much of yesterday programming the early voting machines and testing them for accuracy.

Calhoun's two ballot commissioners, Nancy Bremar (Republican) and Melissa Hixon (Democrat) monitored the tests, with Calhoun's three commissioners, Rick Sampson, Kevin Helmick and Bob Weaver.

Kirby said "The machines have been approved for early voting," after a number of voting tests and cross-checks.

The statewide primary election is Tuesday, May 13th. The last day to register is April 22nd.

Absentee voting by mail has already begun and ballots will be received until May 7th.

Early voting in person will begin April 23 during regular business hours of the County Clerks office, and on Saturday May 3rd, 9 to 5 and ending Saturday May 10th at 5 p.m.

Early voting in person can be done by anyone without any excuse, allowing voters a better opportunity to vote, said Kirby.

There will be no early voting on Monday May 12th, 2008.

Absentee voting by mail, contact the Clerk's Office for an application or down load one from the Secretary of State's Web Site and submit to the Clerk.

Some reasons to vote by mail are, personal or business travel, illness, injury (doctors name required), physical disability, incarceration, uniformed services member or spouse or dependent, employment and college student.
