Glenville State College's Lady Pioneers are joining with an estimated 600 colleges nationwide to increase public awareness concerning breast cancer.

The team will be wearing "Think Pink" warm-up jerseys during Friday's home game against Ohio Valley. Fans who wear something pink get into the game free.

Senior Karina Kendrick heard about the "Think Pink" project and led local organizational efforts.

Kendrick (pictured left) contacted national organizers, then secured support from her teammates, coaches and administrators at the college.

"I thought it would be good for the campus to get involved," Kendrick said.

The effort was inspired by the loss of a close family friend who died of the disease two years ago.

The game's 50/50 drawing money will be donated in support of breast cancer research and/or education. In addition, fans can make donations at the door or by contacting the Glenville State College Athletic Department.

The "Think Pink" initiative was created in 2007 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to raise breast cancer awareness. More than 120 schools participated in the program last year.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women.

In addition to being the lone senior on the Lady Pioneer squad, Karina Kendrick is also an honor student intent on pursuing a career as an attorney.
