PROSECUTOR MATTHEW MINNEY RESIGNS POSITION

(01/05/2008)
Calhoun prosecutor Matthew J. Minney submitted his resignation to the Calhoun Commission yesterday.

Minney (left) who was first appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Tony Morgan in 2003, was then elected to the prosecutor's position in 2004.

He has accepted a position with the West Virginia Public Service Commission, his resignation is effective January 15th.

Calhoun Commission president Rick Sampson said "Minney was a full-time prosecutor in what is a part-time job, going beyond the call."

Sampson said the Commission is looking at appointing an interim prosecutor who will serve until the end of 2008.

Sampson said, "We are accepting applications," saying they should be sent to Calhoun County Clerk Richard Kirby.

Candidates seeking to fill the elected position can file starting January 14th, with the winner taking office in January, 2009.

Minney said he has a number of mixed feelings about leaving, but feels like the new job is a good opportunity.

A native of Shock, Gilmer County, he had been employed by the West Virginia Supreme Court in Charleston and as a law clerk with the 14th Judicial Circuit before coming to Calhoun.

Minney graduated first in his class at Glenville State College in 1996 with a degree in education, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence at West Virginia University in 2001, near the top of his class.

"I express my appreciation to the people of Calhoun for allowing me to serve," he said.
