MONEY PACKAGE COMPLETE FOR WEST FORK-SAND RIDGE WATER EXTENSION

(09/14/2007)
The Calhoun Commission has been advised that $1,500,000 has been approved by the Appalachian Regional Commission for the completion of a 21-mile water extension from Arnoldsburg to Chloe and from Millstone to Sassafras Ridge and Russett.

The long proposed project for the Mt. Zion Public Service District could be put out for bid late this year and construction could start in 2008.

The proposal indicates the project in now costing $5.2 million dollars.

Mt. Zion Public Service District secretary Wilma Mace said earlier this year that 150 customers originally signed for taps, the minimum number to secure funding.

Since then, the ARC says the system will serve 183 households, two churches, two businesses and a volunteer fire department.

The project also includes two water tanks, 70 fire hydrants and a number of pumps.

Residents will benefit from better fire protection and lower insurance rates.

The 21-mile project will be photographed from the air before leaves return in the spring.

Signers agreed to pay a $100 tap fee and agreed to get water for three years. The average water bill would be about $26 a month, said Mace.

The costs of hooking to the line later are considerably increased.
