SIERRA CLUB JOINS SUIT AGAINST MASSEY COAL

(08/28/2007)
The Sierra Club wants to join a federal government lawsuit that accuses Massey Energy of thousands and thousands of Clean Water Act violations.

The group announced its intentions yesterday, saying Massey routinely shows it's unwilling to meet moral and legal obligations to protect streams and drinking water supplies in West Virginia.

The Sierra Club will join the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, and Coal River Mountain Watch, which successfully sought to join the case in June.

The gigantic lawsuit was filed last May by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Massey spokesman Jeff Gillenwater says the company is trying to reach a settlement with the EPA.

Massey estimates the case could lead to fines ranging from 1.5 million dollars to 7 million dollars.

The company historically views such lawsuits as the price of doing business.
