The Creston school homecoming will be held Sunday, August 12, starting at 1 P. M. at the Creston Community Building. Everyone with ties to the community are urged to come and spend the afternoon visiting, reminiscing, partaking of good food, sharing memories and contributing to the memory book. Also the next Creston Community poker run is September 15.

There were lots of good items, including some fresh vegetables, at the Creston Community rummage sale which was held on August 4. Some folks came just to partake of the kitchen goodies.

Delma Starcher, age 87, widow of Glover Starcher, passed away after an extended illness. She was the last member of the Rezin Arthur family. She and her family had formerly lived on Little Creek.

Betty Rae McFarland, age 79 of Gay, passed away. She was the mother of Denver McFarland.

Jerry "Bimbo" Schrader, age 56, of Little Creek passed away. He was the son of the late Howard and Faye A. Schrader.

Local residents are making plans for the Wirt County Fair which starts on August 8.

Keith Belt filled his regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. Church.

A representative of the Mid Ohio Valley Health Department was calling on local residents and checking out their septic systems.

Mr. & Mrs. Darryl Bushong and Mrs. Olin Nuzum were attending to business in the Creston area.

The puppy fellow was back in Creston trying to swap more wiener dogs for hugs, or at least get some more hugs.

Jake Boggs and Mr. & Mrs. J. I. Morris were in Creston making hay. In the evenings, after working all day, that Jake took the damsels to the fair in the evenings "to see the horse pulls, the big trucks, etc."

Carl Harris and Frank Conley were in Creston hauling hay last week.

It was learned that Joe O'Ferrell has made headway removing the lost tools in his well over in the Newark country. He is now doing a washover.

While the price of crude has set records on the world scene, the price of local gasoline has dropped to the $2.75 range. Local Pennsylvania grade crude price dropped $1.50 over the weekend to $70.25/bbl and natural gas for August settled at about $6 & a dime.

Both Dominion and Chesapeake continue to pick up leases in Calhoun County while the latter filed over 100 new leases in Roane County where earlier they threatened to "pull up their wells and leave" over the results in the fraud lawsuit. Dominion is also taking coalbed methane leases in Calhoun County.

Equitable Production Company which is one of the largest oil and gas operators in West Virginia announced that, as a result of the "Tawney case" against Columbia Natural Resources and Chesapeake Energy, they will now be calculating royalties differently to comply with the rules set down in that case. There is also a class action suit pending against Equitable.

Charleston Attorney David McMahon is working to set up a group of surface owners to deal with abuses against landowners. The new group, W. Va. Surface Owners Rights Organization's headquarters are at 1500 Dixie Street in Charleston (25311) and dues are $30.

It has been learned that Iran is directly involved with ¾ of the roadside bombings in Iraq, one of the fronts in the worldwide war on terror. Hussein Obama said he wanted to open up a new front by invading Pakistan. After listening for only a short time to some of the would be players one quickly can conclude that they don't have a clue, are very reckless with the truth and have absolutely no concerns about the soldiers who are doing the fighting to protect them so they can go around making stupid statements to impress would be presidential voters. Of course then the South Carolina police picked up two Middle East types with explosives near a military nuclear facility.

H. Wayne Nida is building a new garage.

The closure of the wood processing facility in Elizabeth has caused considerable consternation. The last bunch of payroll checks were said to have "lots of bounce" and it is said one of the principals of the operation hurriedly relocated to Estonia leaving the others "holding the bag". It is hoped that someone with the background and experience to make matters a go purchases the operation and then there will be employment opportunities plus a local market for less than choice logs.

Elderberries are now turning and some have noted that there seem to be more deer this year than last. Also lots of young turkeys are seen with the hens. They should make tasty meals for the coyotes that no one claims to have imported to the area.

Nancy Hall is scheduled to meet with her doctor.
