SCAM CALLER STRIKES CALHOUN

(07/30/2006)
A well-known telephone scam has come to Calhoun, according to Calhoun Sheriff Carl Ballengee.

"It is a scam to get credit or debit card information from the person being called," said the sheriff.

A call originating from a Florida cell phone to a Rush Run resident last week, promised to deposit money in the persons account, provided the scam artist could get the correct information.

Ballengee said he contacted the sheriff in Clearwater, Florida in an attempt to track the call.

The scam artist even gave an "official" government employee ID number, to make sure the recipient of the call would know it was "legal."

The scam artist used a fake name.

"Hopefully, citizens will be wary when callers request personal information," concluded Ballengee.
