ROANE FAMILY SUES OVER DRILLER'S DEATH

(05/20/2006)
The family of a Roane County man who died in a drilling accident is suing the S. W. Jack Drilling Company, the land's owners and two company employees for wrongful death.

The complaint was filed in Logan Circuit Court on Wednesday.

The suit alleges that Andrew John Murphy, who died on Nov. 2, 2005, fell into a mud pit at Yawkey Drill site No. 9, which was operated by S.W. Jack Drilling Co.

The suit says the pit's lining was improperly attached and it fell into the pit. When Murphy and a co-worker tried to pull the lining back out, Murphy fell between the lining and the edge of the pit and drowned, the document says.

The suit seeks unspecified punitive and compensatory damages, as well as damages for emotional distress and mental anguish.
