CALHOUN SECOND AFTER FIRST DAY OF STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Eight of a 11 Calhoun wrestlers posted opening day victories as the West Virginia High School State Wrestling Tournament got under way at the Big Sandy Center in Huntington.

With eight winners the Red Devils amassed 24.5 points to be a solid second 15.5 points behind Class AA/A leader and nine-time defending champion Oak Glen. Point Pleasant, with 21.5 points, is third.

After losing its first two matches - at 103 and 112 - the Red Devils reeled off eight victories in the next nine matches.

Tyler Bain got the Red Devils' first win at 119 pounds when he scored a 3-1 victory over Tony Jones of Williamstown. The victory sends him into today's match against Ryan Hotchkiss of Keyser.

After Bain's victory Eddie Burrows kept the Red Devils rolling with a win at 125. Then Jaron Sampson won at 130 and Justin Ramsey had an easy victory at 135.

Jeff Goodrich fell to highly regarded Cruz McIntyre of Liberty Harrison at 140.

It was the last match the Red Devils were to lose. Caleb Hart won at 145 then Paul Goodrich had an easy victory at 189. That was followed by wins by Zack Yeager (215) and Dustin Whipkey (275).

All Calhoun's winners will wrestle in second round matches today while the three losers will begin action in the wrestle-backs.

Today's action gets under way at 11:30 a.m. The top three teams (Oak Glen, Calhoun and Point Pleasant) were followed by Grafton, Oak Hill and Roane.
