WIRT COUNTY PIONEER DAY - Third Annual Event At Elizabeth

The 3rd Annual Wirt County Pioneer Day will be celebrated in Elizabeth, WV, on Saturday, October 8.

The traditions of the past will come alive as Elizabeth fills with adults and children dressed in 19th-century clothing.

Visitors will enjoy bluegrass music, square dancing, and pioneer games.

Demonstrations of pottery making, apple butter stirring, spinning, soap making, carving, and basket weaving will fill court house square.

On special display will be Johnny Boston's 70 foot fully-working 1915 Standard Oil Rig. You will be also be able to hear the sounds of hit and miss engines displayed by the Nichol's family. Special presentations during the day will be a character presentation of the West Virginia frontier confederate spy, Belle Boyd, portrayed by Patty Cooper on the Museum Lawn at 2 p.m.

On the stage at 11 a.m. Dr. Virginia Gray will tell the real story of "POCAHONTAS." A pioneer wedding is being planned for 4 p.m. on the museum lawn.

The Beauchamp-Newman Museum will serve beans and cornbread and give tours of the handmade brick structure built in 1830 by William Beauchamp, the grandson of the first settler in the county in 1796.

The Kanawha Hotel built by Manlove Beauchamp around 1800 will also be open for tours. A log wall of the original structure has been recently uncovered and can be viewed along with the dishes used to serve the settlers until the end of WW1.

Vendors will be selling homemade items, such as; metal crafts, woodcrafts, pottery, and a variety of craft items. Lots of "good eats" will be served by local organizations and bluegrass groups will be "jamming" around the square.
