TV NEWS COVERING ARNOLDSBURG CONTROVERSY - "If He Can't Be Good To Women..."

(08/23/2005)
It has been a while since regional TV news has come to Calhoun to cover a story, but last night WSAZ-3 from Huntington showed up at a special but abbreviated meeting of the local school board.

Their story was to cover the controversy over the hiring of Dr. Gene Rizzo as principal of Arnoldsburg Elementary School.

Rizzo has been officially hired by the local school system and he is expected to show up for work Friday.

Last night the board and superintendent Ron Blankenship focused on filling hiring gaps and other preparations for the beginning of school Friday, offering no comment about the Rizzo situation.

TV reporters stopped at Arnoldsburg's Speedy Mart to interview Brenda Holcomb, who believes Rizzo should not have been hired for the position.

Holcomb told reporters "It is too much to ask the parents and grandparents to trust this man with their children eight hours a day," although Rizzo's record does not indicate he has had problems as a principal or educator, or any problems with children.

WSAZ-TV taped Superintendent Blankenship and board members last night during a special meeting that did not address the Rizzo problem

A parent told TV news they plan on taking their children to another school.

Holcomb is seeking names for a petition which requests Dr. Rizzo resign or be removed from his principalship.

"If he can't be good to women what makes him think he can be good to children," said Tina Hall in an interview at Speedy Mart. Supporters of Rizzo says he is wrongfully being punished for problems he experienced in his personal life.

A second meeting regarding opposition to Rizzo's hiring is scheduled this morning at 10 a.m. at the Upper West Fork Park community building.
