HAMPSHIRE CITIZENS WANT EDUCATION OFFICIALS OUSTED

(04/30/2005)
A Hampshire County citizens group wants to oust the county school superintendent and three school board members.

The Citizens for Quality Education in Hampshire County says the four should go because their management of the system led to February's state Board of Education decision to strip the system of its accreditation and declare a state of emergency.

The action is following the indictment and firing of county school employee Jerry Mezzatesta.

Mezzatesta, through the county school system, allegedly misdirected state and federal funds, including some education money being sent to local fire departments.

Because the petitions seek the removal of elected officials, a three-judge panel appointed by the state Supreme Court will hear the case.
