FACILITIES BUILDING, FOOTBALL FIELD MOVING AHEAD - No Problems Reported With Baseball Field

(05/05/2001)
The new athletic facilities building at Calhoun Middle/High School is "still full-steam ahead," according to Facilities Principal Roger Propst. Propst said the goal has been to complete the snack bar and public rest rooms before football season this fall. The 104' x 60' concrete floor is now being poured and the local roofing contractor, Jack Clark will be starting his part of the project soon.

Propst said he is hopeful football can be played on the new field this fall. "We will play there if it is ready," he said. Work will start on the press box and scoreboard soon. The old bleachers from Grantsville will be moved to the location, but Propst was cautious about funding the new bleachers, a big ticket item.

He said the Calhoun County Athletic Complex Committee (CCACC) will be meeting this Monday to work on labor and funding issues for the field.

Propst said he was happy to report no problems with the new baseball field since the first home game has been played there. Concerns had been raised about sunlight in players eyes related to the positioning of the field. The first home games posed the biggest problem, he said, and they were moved to away game sites.

"Umpires, coaches and players have not reported a problem since then," said Propst. He said next year the earlier games will be scheduled away.

"We knew the positioning of the field was not ideal, but it was the best we could do with the money we had," he concluded. "We have now played on the field and know what to expect and how to adjust. We will make sure it is safe."
