Gary "Cook" Starcher, 60, was described in "stable but serious condition" Wednesday
in Charleston Area Medical Center. Surgeons removed a lung yesterday, a result of
trauma he experienced in a four-wheeler accident earlier this week. Starcher was attempting to retrieve a buck deer he had killed on his property on the Calhoun-Roane line at the head of Sam's Run. He also suffered head injuries. A family spokesperson said "We're praying he gets through the 72-hour critical period, right now they think he will survive." He was air-lifted from the Upper West Fork Park after he was rescued from the woods by Calhoun EMS, the Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Department and neighbors. A 12-year-old Kanawha County boy was injured by gunshot while hunting with his father near Gandeeville, Roane County on Tuesday. The youth was not seriously injured, according to the Gandeeville-Harmony VFD, in what was described as a grazing wound. DNR officers had a busy day in Calhoun with reports of hunters shooting from the road, while several property owners complained about trespassing. One incident involved a man shooting from outside a vehicle toward a hillside near Furr's Auto Sales on Route 5, then leaving the area. Reports indicate he was later arrested. Another report was a hunter shooting from his vehicle on Bull River. In the big buck department, Okey Collins checked a 13-point at ChaTis in Grantsville. Reed's Store at Five Forks said Bill Edwards and Mike Reese checked 10-pointers. Several 8-point and 9-point bucks checked, but today the number of doe deer exceeded the buck kill. |
