of the Calhoun Chronicle dated 5/25/1897.
John, son of Lewis Gardner of Big Springs, this county, met with quite
a painful, and probably fatal accident last Tuesday. He picked up
a rifle gun, thinking it was not loaded, and placing his foot on the hammer
blew in the muzzle of the gun. His foot slipped from the hammer causing
the gun to go off, the ball striking him in the mouth, knocking quite a
number of teeth, and lodging in the upper portion of his head. Physicians
were summoned, but at last account had not been able to locate the ball.
We understand he is in a very precarious condition with little hope for
recovery.
