A former Calhoun physician, Dr. Joseph Vazquez (pictured left) has died in Gainesville, Georgia.

Dr. Vazquez left his medical practice in Grantsville about 35 years ago, but said, "Grantsville was always my love."

He practiced medicine in Calhoun from 1963-76.

"There were days when I thought the (over) work would kill me," he said.

He thought about the struggle to keep practicing a few years later when his health deteriorated and he required some heart by-passes.

"I was seeing 40 patients a day, delivering babies and working at the hospital," during those years, with only a few days away from the practice."

Dr. Vazquez left his medical practice in Grantsville 35 years ago, always saying, "Grantsville was always my love."

He received his BS degree from the University of Puerto Rico and his MD from the School of Medicine Puerto Rico in the first graduating class at the age of 23.

He was a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and practiced in rural West Virginia and Blakely, Georgia until his retirement in 1999.

Dr. Vazquez served in the United States Armed Forces 1956 to 1958.
