Aged Beech Woman Dead
Mrs. Sarah Houchin, wife of F.M. Houchin, died Tuesday at her home at
Arnoldsburg, W.Va., at the age of 90.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the
family home, in charge of Rev. Harrison Marks. Interment was in the
Houchin cemetery.
She was a daughter of the late Peter and Nahalia Arnold Mace.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Burkhouse, of Ivydale,
Mrs. Lucretia Allen, of Williamstown, and Mrs. May King, of Spencer; three
sons, Grover C. and Charles L. Houchin, of Leatherbark, and Lowell C. Houchin,
of Parkersburg; 31 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
NOTE: It has long been argued by genealogical researchers that
Mahalia's maiden name was Marks. This has been based on the existence
of a marriage record in Kanawha County. However, family oral historians
have long contended that Mahalia's maiden name was Arnold and that either
the minister performing the marriage or the individual recording it had
entered the name incorrectly. This obituary is provided in the hope
that it may in same small measure help to resolve the question. -
