INTRODUCTION
There is a conspicuous absence of record on the
black families that graced our
Calhoun wilderness, some of them arriving before
the
Civil War.
Many of them are
buried on the hillsides of farms on which they
labored for others, some of them as
slaves, marked only by field stones.
There is no
mention of black families in the
Calhoun History Book-1989.
While it seems that most
of the Calhoun blacks were
widely accepted in the community, before and after
the Civil War, it was not
without prejudice or stereotype that they lived on
Darkey Fork (down from "Nigger
Low Gap") and on Raccoon Run or Nigger Ridge.
In
Calhoun County the Klu
Klux Klan was alive and well during the early part
of the twentieth century, although
there is little record they directly harassed our
black families, which could could be debated.
This account is a collection of history, stories,
and genealogy, compiled from various
sources, with the intention that others will be
inspired to contribute.
The Genealogies
The date of arrival of the black families in Calhoun County will no
doubt always remain only an estimation. While
they may well have been here for a period of time prior to purchasing
land, it is believed that all, except possibly
Bone Ratliff, purchased land here at the time they actually began
their residency.
Although they arrived at
approximately the same time, it appears that the Pine Creek
Settlement
came from Parkersburg while the Raccoon Run
Settlement came from Lewis County.
Many marriages between the two
settlements are recorded.
The Radcliff/Ratliff
Family
The Radcliff/Ratliff Family appears first in Calhoun County in the
1870 Calhoun County Census. Enumerated at
location 76-76 in Sherman District is one Stephen Radcliff, age 64,
N.
Boneparte, age 21; Julia Anne, age 21;
Albert N., age 18; Susan, age 2; Cloe (Chloe?), age 9/12.
Oral history states that Bone Ratliff was a slave owned by Peregrine
Hays of Arnoldsburg and there is some
evidence that this may be true. The 1880 Census for
Calhoun shows Bone (Napoleon Boneparte) living in Sherman District,
location S009 and being 33 years of age.
Enumerated in Lee District in the same census is the family of
Charles
W. Ratcliff, a black male, age 30, living at
location L028. This could possibly have been a brother to Bone
Ratliff. Also living at location L028 is George W.
Hays, son of Peregrine Hays.
The Hicks Family and the Pine Creek
Settlement
James Ashby is buried in the
Hicks Cemetery under the name of James Ashby Hicks. Evidence that
seems to refute this supposition is a
marriage recorded in Wood County which shows James Ashby, 26, son of
Lindsey and Rose, born in Augusta Co.,
VA marrying Minerva Dyer, 25, parents not given, born in Braxton
County. Marriage performed by John Hall.
Date, December 25, 1866. No notation indicating race.
Land records in the Calhoun County Clerk's Office reveal that on May
14, 1879 Levi Johnson deeded to Minerva
Ashby, the wife of James Ashby, "that for and in consideration of the
sum of Four hundred and thirty four dollars
and ninety cents. One hundred dollars of which was paid the first of
April 1877 the ballance of which with the
accruing interest thereon to be paid . . ." land on the Big Fork of
Pine Creek containing 124-1/2 acres. (Deed Book
6, page 84)
On February 3, 1885, James Ashby, deeds to Laura Hicks 2 acres off
the
tract purchased from Levi Johnson for
the sum of ten dollars. (Deed Book 9, page 31) Laura continues to buy
land over a long period of time until she has
extensive holdings.
Some of the other members of Pete's family
purchase land also, including lots in Grantsville in
both the T.R. Stump Addition (North Side) and Hathaway Addition
(South
Side).
The first two of Pete and Laura Hicks' children, Ashby and Gertie,
according to family history, were born in
Parkersburg and the first of their children born in Calhoun appears
to
have been Edward Langston born in
February 1878.
Pete and Laura were enumerated as a separate
household
in the 1880 Census.
The dates of arrival of the other known members of the black
community
on Pine Creek remains a mystery.
The Martin and McDonald Families and the Raccoon
Run Settlement
The 1850 Census of Lewis County lists one Robert Martin and his
family
living there in 1850. And among his
children is Julia who will become the wife of Washington McDonald.
Raccoon Run, Three Forks and
Bear Fork

The first land purchase for the land on Raccoon Run (and the name
existed before the arrival of its black
residents) is also recorded in the Deed Books in the Calhoun County
Clerk's Office. On November 20, 1877,
William E. and Susan M. Arnold, his wife, (enumerated in the 1850
Lewis County Census as a lawyer) deed to
Washington McDonald and Robert Martin a total of 898 acres lying on
Raccoon Run, Three Forks of Bear Fork,
and Rush Run. (Deed Book 4, page 528) Partial payment for the land
was the land owned near Weston by Robert
Martin.
The Colaway or Galloway
Family
Found only in the 1880 Calhoun Census, this family was enumerated at
location S011 (the same location as the
family of Sandy Muse): Colaway, Henry, BM, 34, Farmer, born in VA;
Elizabeth, BF, 29, Wife, born in VA; Anna,
BF, 8, Daughter, born in VA; Willie V., BF, Daughter, born in WV;
John
R., BM, 3, Son, born in WV; Mary B.E.,
BF, 2, Daughter, born in WV.
This family does not appear in the 1900
Calhoun Census nor have we found any
marriage records to 1927. Treacy Jane Wilson Stump gives this family
name as Galloway.
The Fulkner
Family
The Henderson
Family
Although the Henderson Family has been mentioned in writings and is
remembered by individuals still living, little
information is available. Treacy Stump mentions the Hendersons as
being part of the black community on
Raccoon Run and Bob Knotts remembered a boy named Tommy Henderson who
often accompanied the visually
impaired Sandy Muse whenever he left the settlement.
Apparently this
family also had an early association with
the Hicks Family on Darkey Fork as this entry may be found in the
1880
Calhoun Census, enumerated at location
C004 (the same location as the family of Pete Hicks): Henderson,
Charles, BM, 43, Farmer, born in VA; Sarah J.,
MF, 43, Wife, Keeping House, born in VA; Jesse, MM, 16, Son, Works on
Farm, born in VA; Mary, MF, 11,
Daughter, At Home, born in VA; Florence, MF, 7, Daughter, born in VA;
Minerva, MF, 5, Daughter, born in VA.
The Ogden
Family
Another familiy of which we know very little is the Ogden's.
Enumerated at location C005 (same as James Ashby)
in the 1880 Census it appears that Jesse, one of the children listed
in that census, is buried in the Catlip Cemetery
on Raccoon Run. The 1880 Calhoun Census lists the following: Ogden,
David, MM, 50, Farmer, born in VA;
Sarah E., MF, 32,Wife, Keeping House, born in VA; Jesse, MM, 25, Son,
Farmer, born in VA; Lucy, MF, 7,
Daughter, born in WV; Amanda, MF, 4, Daughter, born in WV; Charles
Wm., MM, 1/12 (May 1880), born in WV;
Jefferson, Essex, BM, 39, Servant, Farmer, born in VA.
The
Genealogies
It is acknowledged that many of our readers will have little interest
in the complex genealogies of the black
families, but we felt it was a part of our history which needed
preservation.
Genealogical research is never easy
and some researchers spend a lifetime without finishing their own
family.
The struggle is even more difficult for
blacks.
During their enslavement they were treated not as humans but
more like animals, no records were kept,
families were torn asunder, and many had only first names given to
them by their masters.
Often, with
emancipation, they took the surname of their master.
It is hoped that the information contained here may be of some use to
researchers seeking their black roots in
Calhoun County. We have not attempted to extend the information down
to include any persons who may be living
at the present time because we do not wish to infringe on the privacy
of any individual, but at the same time enough
information is given that living persons should have little
difficulty
"linking" to the information provided.
