CALHOUN COMMISSION GETS STARGAZING STUDY GRANT FOR PARK - "Sky Will Take Your Breath Away"

(03/25/2014)

A grant to explore the development of Calhoun County Park as a "Night Sky" destination for amateur astronomers has been approved by the WV Development Office for the Calhoun Commission.

The $8,307 grant will conduct a feasibility study of the park, which has been a long-time destination for astronomers since the area is one of few "dark sky" regions on the eastern seaboard, not hindered by artificial light generated by urban areas.

Focus groups composed of professional and amateur star gazers will be directed toward the development of night-time observatory facilities at the park.

The funding for the project comes from grants through the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
