CALHOUN HAS 57 NEW CASES SINCE LAST FRIDAY - WV LEADS NATION WITH ROARING HIGH NEW CASES - Hospitals In Crisis Mode

(09/19/2021)
West Virginia has hit new pandemic records with COVID-19 cases since it began.

The state is now number one, leading the nation with the most new COVID-19 cases per capita.

The state is last with vaccinations.

It appears that Calhoun has 57 new cases since last Friday.

Last week, Calhoun had 37 new cases in a single day.

There are now 86 Covid-19 outbreaks in West Virginia schools, a state Department of Education official told lawmakers Tuesday.

The last available information from the Calhoun school system was on September 9, when Superintendent Kelli Whytsell confirmed that 63 students, nine teachers and five service personnel had COVID-19, then leading to remote learning.

Whysell told the Hur Herald that current numbers were not available because of testing results not being available.

Many state hospitals have run out of beds. Nine of WVU hospitals are in crisis mode.

Most new cases are among children, with at least a dozen in intensive care, with some on ventilators, with the most cases in the 30-50 age group.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice dropped mask mandates late last Spring and opened up public venues in an effort to return to normal, including schools.

Greenbrier County’s health department, the governor's home county, has issued an indoor mask mandate, effective immediately.

Justice has said for weeks such decisions need to be made at the local level.

Updated data shows that 0.97% of fully vaccinated residents have tested positive for COVID-19, while 0.012% of those vaccinated residents have died.

There are now 29,744 active cases. The previous peak was 29,257 which was reached on Jan. 10, 2021.

The DHHR has confirmed 2,320 new WV cases in the past 24 hours.

The agency is also reporting 57 COVID-19 deaths including 18 that were not previously reported as deaths caused by the virus, including residents of Clay and Wirt.
