FRIDAY WV COVID-19 - CALHOUN HAS 23 NEW CASES THIS WEEK - State Has 339 New Cases, Outbreak Hits Calhoun-Middle High School

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported six new COVID-19 deaths on Friday and 339 new positive cases.

It appears that Calhoun has 23 new cases this week, the highest number since the pandemic began.

Calhoun Middle-High School has closed to in-person schooling until May 17, the system saying there is an outbreak of COVID-19, with a large number being quarantined.

During a news conference Friday, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced a target date for removing the mask mandate on June 20.

The active case total is 7,075. The overall positive test rate remained at 5.14% while the daily positive test rate went from 3.65% to 4.16%.

As of data from Thursday, there were 241 people hospitalized with the virus, including 79 in intensive care and 39 people on ventilators.

Overall, 616,709 have been fully vaccinated in the state. There have been 145,886 COVID-19 recoveries since the pandemic started.
