VIOLENT ASSAULT - One man was arrested and another hospitalized in Parkersburg Tuesday night after an assault involving a sharp object near the former marble factory near East and Seventh streets.

According to a release from Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin, officers responded to the area around 9 p.m. Tuesday where Robert Cunningham, of Parkersburg, said he’d been assaulted during an altercation with James Michael Ashwell, 29, of Vienna. Cunningham said he’d been staying in a tent outside the factory with Ashwell’s wife.

The release says Cunningham sustained extensive injuries to his nose, which was partially amputated, and mouth, which had several teeth missing.

Ashwell was located in the tent, the release says. He was arrested on a charge of malicious assault and arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court. Ashwell is now in custody at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County on a $50,000 bond.
