Cain's Riffle on a fall evening

In this county's earliest days, every hollow, wide spot, or hill was given a name, in addition to the more prevalent villages and landmarks.

Calhoun has long had a "Cain's Riffle," a short distance east of Big Bend on Rt. 5.

The river crossing has been the access to the Francis Cain farm, until the construction of a bridge, a short distance down river.

Historically, most Calhoun travelers on Rt. 5 have been acquainted with the spot because it was among the first locations to be closed by rising water along the Little Kanawha.
