FLU VACCINE LIMITED FOR COUNTY STUDENTS - CDC Criteria Implemented, Supplies Short

(12/11/2003)
4 PM UPDATE - In a good faith effort to immunize Calhoun County students, Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center was able to obtain an additional supply of flu vaccine.

The demand for the vaccine has far exceeded available resources. The response for the School Based Health flu shot clinics has been overwhelming, in large part because of media coverage and the increased awareness of concerned parents.

School Based Health Centers at Arnoldsburg and Pleasant Hill elementary schools had flu shot clinics on Thursday, December 11.

Because of the high demand with many parents giving consent for the vaccine, by 11:00 a.m. today Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center began to utilize the Center for Disease Control's screening criteria to determine which students would be vaccinated.

This same screening process will be used at the School Based Health flu shot clinic to be held on Friday, December 12 at Calhoun Middle High School.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends flu vaccine for children with existing health problems that make it risky for them to get the flu. This includes children with the following:

Heart disease

Lung disease (including asthma)

Immune problems

Blood diseases

Cancer

Diabetes (type 1 or type 2) Chronic renal and metabolic diseases

Children who are on long-term aspirin therapy because of, for example, Rheumatoid arthritis

Parents/guardians of students at each of the county's schools were provided with the CDC's immunization recommendations and guidelines.
