GOVERNOR DECLARING DISASTER FLOODING - FEMA Could Arrive In State Shortly

(11/22/2003)
Governor Bob Wise said 2004 will go down in history as one of the worst flood years for the State of West Virginia, with two floods within a two week period.

Wise says he hopes to get word that the President has declared six counties eligible for disaster relief funding from last week's flooding.

The governor says he will be adding at least 12 and possibly as many as 20 counties because of this weeks flooding.

When approval is may, FEMA application application teams could be arriving in the state.

Calhoun's OES Director Bill Stemple has asked county residents to go ahead and call Calhoun Control at 354-9271 and report damage, leaving name and phone number.

Several businesses, houses and the Arnoldsburg School received damage from the flooding West Fork of the Little Kanawha, in addition to several residences along the Little Kanawha River.

The floods have killed at least three people, two of which drove a vehicle into flood water attempting to cross, and a third wandered into a stream and was swept away.

The state Office of Emergency Services estimates 1,848 homes have either been severely damaged or destroyed by flooding this week.
