Its official - Calhoun County High School is in Class A. And because of that some football schedule changes are in the offing.

The Red Devils have already announced plans to drop Ravenswood from the schedule and may drop Clay County and Braxton County too.

Calhoun County athletic director Tim Davis said a lot of that has to do with finding replacement games for those teams.

"We tried to work something out with Paden City but that fell through," Davis said. "Then we tried to work something out with South Harrison, but that fell through too."

Davis said that he got a call from Parkersburg Catholic and that the Crusaders may be added to the schedule. Calhoun played PCHS until two years ago when it dropped it from the schedule in favor of St. Marys.

Calhoun County football coach Bucky Stewart said the change in classification, and the probable change in the schedule, would make it easier for the Red Devils to compete.

"We played these guys hard," Davis said, "but some of them were more than twice as big as us. It is hard to play against schools of that size game in and game out."

According to the latest numbers released by the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC), Calhoun has 267 students in the top three grades. That number drops the school from being the smallest Class AA school to the middle of the Class A pack.

Calhoun's 2003 football opponents and enrollment include Braxton County (605); Roane County (560); Clay County (443); Ravenswood (381); Ritchie (349); Williamstown (328); Doddridge County (307); Gilmer County (278); St. Marys (263) and Wirt County (261). Braxton, Roane, Clay, Ravenswood and Ritchie are all Class AA. The rest are Class A schools.
