Burning house collapses in flood water

A house burned into the flood water of the Little Kanawha River yesterday, a total loss.

Grantsville firemen had difficulty accessing the fire at the mouth of Annamoriah Creek near State Route 5.

Occupant George Duskey and his wife called 911 about 11 a.m. to report a fire underneath the dwelling, which was surrounded by water. He indicated the fire might have started from an electrical short.

The Duskey family, which includes Duskey, his wife and two children, lost everything. The Duskey's have a son, age nine, and a daughter, age six.

Duskey used a boat to cross the flood water to phone for assistance. He and his wife had already taken their two children to neighbors when flood waters started coming up.

The Grantsville VFD had to detour through Hur and Joker to reach the scene, but did manage to string a fire line around a hillside.

Water covered the entire area, including nearby construction equipment being used by the highway department to construct a new bridge across Annamoriah Creek.
