GIANT FALLEN ROCK BLOCKS ROUTE 5 - Highway Now Open

(11/16/2003)
A giant fallen rock blocked Route 5 between Creston and Elizabeth yesterday.

Wirt County DOH supervisor Alvin Engelke said the slip at Burning Springs was pure, high grade sand rock. There was no mud.

The highway department used dynamite and a hydraulic ram to cut it apart, said Engelke.

The rock punched a big hole in the blacktop and at least one driver drove into the boulder after the 6 a.m. incident.

911 initially reported a vehicle was under the rock, but the information was inaccurate.

Wirt DOH was on the scene until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Engelke said work on the area will continue Monday.
