WEST VIRGINIA POWER PLANTS BIG POLLUTERS

(10/30/2003)
Two of West Virginia's power plants have been declared among the biggest polluters in the US, according to the US Public Interest Research Group.

The John Amos Power Plant in Putnam County (number six) and the Mt. Storm Power Plant (number nine) in Grant County are ranked in the top ten when it comes to smog-producing facilities.

The study says the plants release nitrogen-oxide into the air -- which is a leading cause of asthma and heart disease.

The US Public Interest Research group says there's no reason why power plants in the US should be releasing toxic amounts of chemicals. The group says the technology is there to clean up 70-percent of those emissions.

The Bush Administration is trying to change the Clean Air Act and loosen the restrictions on power plants. The environmental research group say it's endangering not only the environment but also the health of Americans.
