A special Hur Herald "Shining Star" goes to the Calhoun County Athletic Complex Committee and the many people who have made the new athletic complex at Mt. Zion a huge success.

Former Calhoun Middle/High School principal Roger Propst, at last nights football game, recognized contributions of time and money that have made the new facility possible.

"I know I speak for the Board of Education, the school administration, faculty, staff and student body of the school, when I say a heartfelt thank you to CCACC, the community, alumni and friends for once again stepping up and providing excellence for our young people," said Propst.

"We dedicate this beautiful complex to the student body of Calhoun Middle/High School, and all those young people who will follow."

Launching the project, the voters of Calhoun approved $533,000 in a bond issue, which was used for site preparation. The CCACC, through fund raising and government grants, raised another $504,000, making a total of $1,037,000.

Just as admirable, the thousands of hours of volunteer labor that helped complete the project.

Financial support came from alumni and friends with donations from at least thirty states - California to Florida.

The CCACC was formed in 1999 to raise funds to assist in the construction of new complex. The hardworking group has raised funds through elimination dinners, basketball tournaments, basket bingo, selling hot dogs, having auctions and dozens of other fundraisers.

Programs were initiated to accept funds from the public, including purchasing a bleacher seat, buying a square of the new field or becoming a member of a donor club.

Propst said three bronze plaques have been permanently affixed to the new facilities building, recognizing those people, groups and companies that have provided direct assistance to the project.
