ILLEGAL ALIENS ARRESTED AT PARKERSBURG WAL-MART - Wal-Mart Disallows Responsibility

(10/24/2003)
A Parkersburg Wal-Mart is among 61 Wal-Marts nationwide where federal officials arrested workers who they say are in the US illegally.

An immigration official in Philadelphia says four workers at the store were arrested Wednesday night in Parkersburg.

More than 300 illegal aliens at stores in 21 states were taken into custody by the sting.

All were working on cleaning crews inside the store, completing a late night shift.

Wal-Mart disallows responsibility for the illegal workers, claiming they were hired through a contractor.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Mona Williams says they aren't considered Wal-Mart associates.

Law enforcement officials say the investigation grew out of earlier probes of Wal-Mart cleaning crews using illegal aliens in 1998 and 2001.

Wal-Mart is the world's biggest retailer and is West Virginia's largest private employer.
