FORMER ASSESSOR GENE HARDWAY PASSES

Former Calhoun County assessor Gene Hardway, 80, of Mt. Zion, has passed away.

Hardway died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Grantsville.

He was born in Braxton County, a son of the late James and Florence Hardway. He was a World War II veteran. He faithfully attended the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Violet M. Hardway; a son, Leonard Hardway; three daughters, Shelia Burch, Shari Johnson and Sara Jane Smith; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy Hardway, Jamie Burch, Tiffani Johnson, Brandi Hardway, Holly Burch, Whitney Johnson, Robert Smith, Bradly Smith, Clarence Smith and Elizabeth Smith; two sisters, Irene and Hallie Lambert, both of Strange Creek, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard Hardway; three brothers, Brooks Hardway, Casto "Doc" Hardway and Carol Hardway; and two sisters, Nellie Reed and Glennis Carter.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg, with the Revs. Rick Swearingen and Mike Worf officiating. Interment will be in the Duffield Cemetery near Duck, W.Va., Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
