DEMS GEAR UP FOR 2004 - Gilmer Event Draws Big Crowd, Democrats Represent American Dream

Democrats came from several counties to Glenville yesterday, gearing up for the 2004 elections. Sandy Pettit, one of the organizers, said "It was good cookin', good company and good politics."

Candidates and officials spoke frequently about getting the Democratic message to the people. Despite inroads made by the Republican Party, most said this election will be a turn-a-round, with people returning to the central beliefs of the Democrat Party.

Sen. Lloyd Jackson, candidate for governor, said the country has been plunged into economic turmoil, after leveling the national debt under the Democrats. Another candidate yelled "And these are suppose to be conservatives!"

George Daugherty, candidate for Secretary of State, said Democrats represent the very best of the American Dream, which some speakers saying has been shattered and tossed aside to big business interests.

Daughtery offered his plan for economic growth, which is based on tourism.

The Gilmer County Democratic Executive Committee prepared the barbecue with all the trimmins' at the Gilmer Recreation Center and several other candidates came out to speak.
