REGIONAL JAIL BILL GOING UP, AGAIN - Counties Face Financial Problems Over Charges

(10/17/2003)
Regional jail bills will be going up again, this time an additional $3 per day for housing inmates.

Higher costs for inmate health care, Workers' Compensation and health insurance coverage for regional jail employees are given as the reason.

Jail costs have become the financial nightmare of many West Virginia counties.

Steve Canterbury told the Regional Jail Authority he will probably request an increase in the daily charge from $45 to $48, a roughly 7 percent hike, to cover the increases.

Willie Akers, a Logan County commissioner, said counties are in no position to absorb additional costs. He noted that the county's quarterly Workers' Compensation premium alone has jumped from $33,000 to $77,000.
