Firemen remove burned mattress from house

Firemen prevented the spread of a bedroom fire Saturday night in a single story modular home on Beech Road, according to Arnoldsburg Fire Chief Fred Waybright.

The Arnoldsburg and Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the Jason Smith residence at 8:21 p.m., about four miles down Beech from Liberty Hill and U. S. 33-119.

Fire did extensive damage to the furniture, a mattress and interior of the area, after a four-year-old child reportedly ignited a mattress.

The child was uninjured, but his mother Kristin Smith received minor burns to her hand. Another child, about one-year-old, was also home when the fire broke out

Damage was mostly restricted to bedroom area

Firemen described the room as "super heated," but Ms. Smith left the room sealed, and the fire was quickly extinguished after firemen arrived.

The Upper West Fork VFD responded on a mutual assistance call from the Arnoldsburg VFD. About a dozen firemen were on the scene.

Other Saturday night calls included a report of a 43-year-old woman struck by a car on Big Root Road, but Calhoun EMS was not dispatched at the request of the caller.
