WEST NILE REPORTED IN 11 COUNTIES - Birds Being Sent For Evaluation

(08/15/2003)
The state says eleven West Virginia counties have reported dead birds that tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to the Calhoun County Department of Health.

The Department of Health and Human Resources says dead birds infected with the mosquito-borne virus have been found in Barbour, Cabell, Jefferson, Wayne, Webster and Wetzel counties.

Infected birds were also previously found in Greenbrier, Kanawha, Morgan, Ohio and Wyoming counties.

The disease can cause flu-like symptoms in humans and potentially fatal swelling of the brain.

There were two West Nile-related deaths in West Virginia last year.

No human infections have been reported this year.

Residents are advised to rid their property of standing water -- a breeding ground for mosquitoes -- and to use mosquito repellent containing DEET.

Dead birds can be submitted for examination. Call 304-354-6101 Calhoun County Department of Health.
