NEW VETERANS FACE HEALTH CARE PROBLEMS - Access To Care A Problem

(08/12/2003)
More than 110,000 veterans are waiting six or more months for a first visit with a VA physician or specialist, according to a VA advocates group.

Army Sergeant Vanessa Turner says she's had to fight to get medical treatment from an unknown illness doctors thought would kill her. She is complaining about the treatment she has received since returning from Iraq.

Turner says there's a double standard for veterans when you look at the hero's welcome given to former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch of Palestine, West Virginia.

Turner returned to her mother's home in Boston last month after hospital stays in Germany and Washington.

The six-year Army veteran says that despite severe nerve damage in her right leg she'd have to wait until mid-October to see a doctor at the local VA hospital.

The wife of a member of the 1092nd Engineers from Spencer had to begin searching for a new OB/GYN after her husband was called to active duty. Her husband's insurance was canceled at his place of employment when he was called. Her physician would not accept the military insurance, nor would any physician in Charleston. She was told she must go to Huntington for care.
